Ashe County, North Carolina, is a beautiful, unspoiled place you will want to explore. Rich in tradition, from bluegrass music to
blueberries by the bucket, there is something for everyone. Leaf-watchers find the fall breathtaking, while snow lovers want to hunker
down or venture out in January. Spring weather brings out the rhododendron and mountain laurel. In summer, festivals abound to
celebrate the local life. The Ashe Chamber is an excellent place
to start.
The New River is popular for canoeing and tubing. A number of local outfitters rent canoes and tubes and will drive you up-river and
help you get started. River journeys vary from one hour to one day at
Zaloo's or
River Camp USA.
Fishing starts here on Reflection Pond which is stocked with bass and bream. Move on, if you like, to Helton Creek, five minutes away,
for fly-fishing on your own or guided by local experts year-round.
For hikers, the
Appalachian Trail is about 20 minutes from the cottage. Several
natural parks are nearby as well, including
The New River State Park and
Mount Jefferson State Park.
Grayson Highlands offers a
hike near wild ponies, and
Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area is rich with
trails. Many of our guests enjoy walks along country roads and through the hardwoods here on the property as much as venturing out.
In winter, cross-country skiing, and snowshoe hiking are popular. Some of our gentler hills are ideal for sledding. Outdoor bonfires
and cookouts in the bowl on snowy evenings are bracing adventures for the cold-hardy.
Cyclists must try the
Virginia Creeper Trail in late spring. Start at White Top or
in Damascus, where
bike rentals with shuttles are available.
Got to golf? Schedule a tee time at
Mountain Aire Golf Club or
Jefferson Landing, both within a half-hour drive.
Shoppers enjoy exploring all the options in nearby towns. Sparta, Glendale Springs, Jefferson and West Jefferson have unique gift
shops and emporiums, antique markets, and art galleries. The Northwest Trading Post on the
Blue Ridge Parkway is known for its local crafts. While in
West Jefferson, the
Ashe County Cheese Factory is worth a look.
The New River Winery is located in Lansing in an old WPA
school converted to shops and a tasting room. The wines can also be purchased in West Jefferson at the Ashe County Cheese Store and
Bohemia, a coffee shop and art gallery.
For theater, Abingdon, Virginia is a popular draw. Except for a few weeks in January, a show is always running at the popular
Barter Theater, sometimes two or three.
Arts and Crafts venues abound. Start at the Ashe Arts Center in West Jefferson and move to the various galleries. The Virginia
Heritage Music Trail, also called
The Crooked Road is within a few
miles along Highway 58.
Mangum Pottery at Turkey Knob offers summer workshops.
Both high-end and casual restaurants are within easy distance for those meals you don't want to have to cook. We are happy to assist
with reservations and directions. We can recommend Shatley Springs for breakfast, Frasers or Michael's in West Jefferson for lunch,
and River House Inn and Restaurant for a fine-dining experience. For coffee, try Anne's Place in Lansing or Bohemia in West Jefferson.
"Choose and Cut" your Christmas tree
starting the Friday after Thanksgiving. Frasier Firs are grown extensively in Ashe County and cutting a tree is a cherished activity
for families throughout the region.
