High bush varieties of blueberries grow best at this elevation, blooming in June and fruiting in July. Our primary challenge is
growing enough for the birds and deer (who may like the branches even more than the fruit.)
Food crops are always organically grown. From late spring through early summer, spinach, arugula, cool-weather greens, lettuces,
leeks and onions thrive. Late summer brings the green beans, squash, tomatoes, peppers, and always something new and experimental. In
autumn, we harvest potatoes and winter squashes as well as cool-weather greens, arugula, radicchio and fennel.
The rock garden to the cherry tree features phlox, salvias, heliopsis, daisies, black-eyed susans, lilies and anemones. Nearer the
house are varieties of roses, echinaceas, achilleas, hollyhocks, daisies and rudbeckias, as well as mountain laurel, lilac, spirea
and hydrangea. Bulbs pop up in the perennial beds as well, throughout the growing season, from daffodils and narcissus to bluebells
and lilies. Sedum and leadwort finish the season, showing off later into fall.
Dahlias, sunflowers and amaranth, the featured flowers grown from seed are showiest in late summer. Earlier annuals include petunias,
lisianthus, zinnias, celosia, and nasturtiums.
Asparagus pops up in May followed by the greening of the parsley, a biennial, and then by the perennial herbs: thyme, oregano and sage.
Rosemary is not winter hardy here and lives in the greenhouse to be planted outdoors again in May. Basil and tarragon are among the
annuals that we plant from seed each year.
Spireas are first to bloom at the cottage along with the spring bulbs from daffodils to tulips. When the tulips die back, we replace
them with dahlias and annuals. Evergreens form the backbone of all the gardens.
