In April 2004, we planted 100 grapevines on the site of the old hay field. The most successful of these were the Foch and Chambourcin
varieties, along with a new Cornell University experimental hybrid now named Coret Noir. Six good friends helped us accomplish the
initial planting and many of the same folks and more returned for a second planting in April 2007. We are attempting to grow our
grapes organically, which is quite a challenge it turns out. The 2007 growing season was particularly difficult due to the a late
freeze and several late frosts followed by a drought.
We are founding members of the
New River Winery which is now located in Lansing, NC.
New River wines are available for tasting and for purchase at the
Ashe Cheese Company and at
Bohemia, both in West Jefferson.
In 2007, we fought fungal diseases and lost. Nevertheless, in 2009, we stubbornly added three new rows, about 100 new grapevines.
